Cruise Ships
Unique voyages await on the tall ships of Windjammer Barefoot Cruises. Pull
into quaint harbors on these noble vessels of yesteryear. Indulge in rum
swizzles, romp on deserted beaches, and eat lunch in your swimsuit. Crew
members climb the masts above as you lean against the rail just a few feet
from the sea. This is adventure at its most relaxed.
Built in 1955 in Scotland, PHAROS, braved the North Sea delivering supplies to
lonely lighthouse keepers and servicing buoys along the coasts of England and
Scotland. A "workhorse" vessel, her fine appointments were still
elegant enough to play hostess to the British Royal Family. Acquired by
Windjammer in 1988 and re-named AMAZING GRACE, she carries on the tradition of
old world charm and elegant service. The newest member and flagship to the
Windjammer fleet, this four-masted Barquentine was formerly known as France
II. Built in 1959 by Forges et al Meditterranee of Le Havre, France, she
served as a meteorological research vessel for the French Government. She was
acquired in 1989 by Windjammer and converted into a traditional tall ship.
Expert craftsmanship is apparent in the hand-carved exotic South American
woods, custom-designed interiors and fixtures, and spacious accommodations.
With its state-of-the-art navigation and communications systems, LEGACY blends
nautical tradition with modern amenities.Queen of the fleet, this 236 foot
Barquentine was built in 1923 for financier E.F. Hutton and christened HUSSAR.
In the 1930's she was sold to shipping magnate George Vettlesen who
re-christened her VEMA. Later she was put into service by Columbia University
sailing over 1 1/4 million miles worldwide. Evidence gathered on her voyages
confirmed the theory of continental drift. Joining the fleet in 1982, MANDALAY
went through an extensive renovation. She is now unparalleled, offering the
ultimate in comfort and style.Built in 1938, ARGUS was one of the last of the
great Portuguese Grand Banks fleet. Featured in the May 1952 edition of
National Geographic magazine and in the late maritime writer, Allen Villers'
book, "The Quest of the Schooner Argus." This legendary 248 foot
schooner was acquired by Windjammer in 1975, and christened POLYNESIA.
Completely refurbished with modern amenities, she blends today's comforts with
yesterday's romance and grace.Built in 1927, CRESSIDA, was one of the only
armor plated private yachts in the world. Confiscated during World War II as a
war prize, she was later acquired by the Vanderbilts and renamed PIONEER.
Racing off Newport Beach, PIONEER was considered one of the fastest tall ships
on the west coast. In 1965, she joined the Windjammer fleet and was christened
YANKEE CLIPPER. Completely restored to her former majesty and beauty, her
modern comforts enhance the nautical heritage and seafaring traditions of
yesterday.
