Laughing Cookie Jar

Pulling up to the old house that day in the rain was one I will never forget. I was so excited in the beginning. An offer we couldn't refuse. Stay for free in my Grandpas house, a two story 5 bedroom house with a full basement on about 2 acres of land. My wife and I had been looking for a reason to move to Oregon and this was it.

My Grandpa had died about 8 months before and the family was having trouble selling the house. The weeds were overgrown and a harsh winter was predicted and on its way. All we had to do was take care of the house and the property and we could stay as long as we liked. Rounding the corner I couldn't believe my eyes. This place looked just like the house from "Night of the living Dead".

Complete with a graveyard right next door. Something the family had neglected to tell me. It was an old Pioneer Cemetery; so close to the house that when we pulled our truck up I had to step on a grave to get out. Coming from a one-bedroom apartment this house was massive. My first night there was spent with one eye open. Getting used to all of the creaks and groans of the house took me a while. Everything was pretty calm for the first 6 months.

Then everything happened at once. I got a job at the local warehouse and was working the graveyard shift. Id arrive home around 3:00am. My wife would be sleeping and I would creep in to bed. One night I was laying there in bed listening to the sound of rain against our windows, when I heard footsteps coming up from the basement. Not just coming up the stairs but pounding up.

Figuring someone had broken into the basement through a window or something I jumped up, turned on the light, grabbed my bat and told my wife to call the police. I ran into the kitchen and listened at the basement door. The footsteps had stopped. I opened the door and turned on the light and proceeded to investigate. There was no one down there. This continued to happen.

Many a night my wife and I would be woken up with the sound of someone coming up the stairs and wed grab each other in the dark and say, "Did you hear that?" About a week later I was sitting in the living room during the day when I heard the sound of the head being lifted off our cookie jar followed by a mechanical laughter noise it makes when this is done, then I heard the head being put back on.

Kind of porcelain against porcelain sound. Figuring my wife had come home early from work and was kidding around I called out to the kitchen "Hey how come your home so early? There was no reply. I searched the house for her but she wasn't home. My Wife's little sister came to visit us for about 2 weeks and decided she wanted to stay upstairs.

We found her asleep the next morning on the living room floor. When asked what the problem was she said she heard noises all night coming from the cubby holes upstairs. Loud shuffling noises. We had not told her of the problems wed been having either. Soon she was making excuses why she had to leave earlier than planned.

She said the house gave her an eerie feeling. I was woken up during the day 3days in a row by my stereo system coming on by itself. It was stored upstairs. The fist time this happened I ran upstairs to tell whoever was up there to turn it off. Once again there was nobody up there. The second time this happened I just laid in bed listening and eventually the music stopped.

The third time this happened I ran upstairs again and the music stopped just as I got around the corner. My wife took of her wedding ring and it disappeared. We found it 1 week later right on top of the kitchen table. More than once my name was called out, loud enough for me to respond, just to find out no one was home. My wife had also been through this.

Knocking coming from the back porch late at night with nobody there. My wife called me up one night scared because there was an old man late at night in the cemetery next door staring at our house. She said he was dressed up like he was straight from the Little house on the Prairie. He had a leather hat and a leather pouch with him. He would just stand there in the graveyard staring at our house.

We stayed for one year in which time we saved up enough money to move. Now that were out of there its OK to look back. It seems like a lifetime ago this was all happening. I don't even like to drive by that house I'm afraid I'll see a face staring at me from a window or something. I feel sorry for the current owners.

I hope they have a better time then we did.
