It Likes Lonely WomenI recently visited my friends Tim and Carol in their new home in a rural area of Massachusetts. They are very down-to-earth, sensible people, not usually given to exaggeration, which makes their story even harder to discount. Their house is old, big and beautiful, down a private road, with trees all around and a pond at the bottom of the garden. And apparently everything is fine when Tim is around, but when he goes out of town on business, Carol has strange experiences. Often it's the sound of someone stomping up the stairs from the basement; the footsteps are incredibly loud and heavy, and they always stop just on the other side of the door. She knows it can't be a real person, because the outside entrance to the basement is locked, and she never hears anyone go back down the stairs. At first, she was terrified by this; now she's just angry. She bangs on the door and yells at the thing on the other side to go away. She has also had problems with someone opening the door that leads to the enclosed sun-room on the back of the house. On numerous occasions, she has heard a banging noise in the middle of the night, and the next morning found the door wide open, even when she knows she has locked it. One night, she decided to foil the whatever-it-was by propping a chair under the door handle, jamming it shut. That night, she was woken by a crashing sound. She went downstairs to investigate (followed by her two cats, who were on the bed with her) and found that the door was still closed -- but two large clay plant-pots (at opposite ends of the room) were laying in pieces on the floor. And then she noticed that the cats were peering through the stair-rails, both following the movement of *something* (she couldn't see it) that appeared to be moving rapidly from one end of the room to the other. Later, she told me, "It was almost as if they were watching a tennis match." |
