Portsmouth Naval HospitalI was told this story by a friend while we worked in the ACTUAL building. During the Civil War, Bld 1 of Portsmouth Naval Hospital was in use. The 3rd floor was the operating room. Thousands of operations were done here most under primitive conditions. Amputated limbs were tossed out the window into a sand pit. Since then, the Navy has moved into all new facilities. He tells me of staff standing duty or holding clinic in Bld 1 having very strange and scary thing happening. The Navy has several night watchmen quit after working one night. Here is my friends story. A group of students got the night watchman to take them to the 3rd floor of Bld 1. He had the ONLY key to the elevator and the door locks. The group arrived in the elevator to the 3rd floor and the door opened. They were met by a gentleman in hospital robes pushing a gurney. The watchman asked him what he was doing and how he got to the 3rd floor, as everything was locked from the outside! They turned around to follow the gurney. They watched him enter a room down the hall on the left. Being only 5 or 6 steps behind, there was no way he was getting away. The watchman turned into the room and there was nothing and no one in the room! The watchman quit the next morning. There are other stories about the Portsmouth Naval Hospital and it's haunted basement and dungeons. |
