Strange Tale From GlasgowMy wife and I visited Edinburgh in Scotland last August. It was our first holiday alone since we started our family 20 years ago. During the week we decided to get the train to Glasgow, where we enjoyed a guided tour of the city on an open top bus. About half way through the journey I received a text message from my daughter in Kent to tell me that the previous night our son had allowed two of his friends to sleep over. Unfortunately our dog , Blackjack, had jumped on their bed and piddled on it! What made me think of this I don't know, but I texted her back the following words: (exact quote) "wee willy winkey runs through the town, upstairs and downstairs, in his night gown." Less than one minute after I sent the text, our tour guide explained: ".......and just down this road here ladies and gentlemen stands the grave of one of Glasgow's most famous poets, William Miller, who wrote the famous children's poem: (exact quote) "wee willy winkey runs through the town, upstairs and downstairs, in his night gown." All the hair on my body stood on end. Since that day, I've tried to analyze the experience. I was sitting half way down the bus, the guide was at the front - there is no way he could have seen my text. I'd never knowingly heard of William Miller before - though I knew the poem. I've been to Glasgow once before, but had no knowledge of William Miller or his burial place. To put it down to pure coincidence, for me, is a bridge too far. Just for the record - I've always been a real skeptic regarding this sort of thing. Best wishes Trevor |
