Where the Monster Lives

My cousin was about 10 yrs old when she heard the noises in the yard.

She had been lying in her bed awake the night before Easter. Her mother, who shelters her children so much, had bought her some ducks to keep outside in the spirit of the season. But it was the dogs who were the first ones to notice something that frightened them.

They began barking furiously & the ducks chimed in with their fearful sqwuaks. At that time she knew something was wrong--that someone had come in their yard. She felt glad to be sheltered indoors, until a second noise got her attention.

From inside the closed closet doors something heavy fell to the floor. She was too afraid to do anything but pray. A man shrouded in light descended at the foot of her bed & turned his head sharply toward the sound of the falling object, as if threatening it to come near.

A dog barked again, but was silenced by a low, menacing growl from the thing as it was leaving.

Years later, her younger sister "Amy" went into that room with my aunt. My aunt, being the person she is, had never let anyone tell her daughter "Amy" that there were such things as monsters. She asked "Amy" if she wanted to sleep in that room and "Amy" calmly responded, "No, Mommy. I don't want to sleep here. 

That's where the monster lives," pointing her little finger at the closet.
