Colosseum and Palatine Museum

The Colosseum is probably the most famous monument in the world: this elliptical colossal construction, with a height of 48mt, has impressed and fascinated men of all Ages. It was begun under Vespasian, as a symbol of the grandeur of the Roman Empire, and inaugurated by the Emperor Titus in the year 80 AD.

Capitoline Museums

CAPITOLINE MUSEUMS - PALAZZO SENATORIO, PALAZZO NUOVO AND PALAZZO DEI CONSERVATORI

The Palazzo Senatorio was built in the 12th Century on the remains of the ancient Tabularium. In 1299 an open loggia was added overlooking the piazza, further walled one century later in order to strengthen the palace, turned into a fortress with the addition of towers by Pope Boniface IX; more corner towers were later added by Popes Martin V and Nicholas V. Michelangelo designed a monumental staircase, in addition to dividing up the façade with giant pilaster strips, large windows and tympanums and a crowning balustrade featuring statues. Girolamo della Porta and Martino Longhi the Elder completed the work with some alterations to the original plan.

The Palazzo Nuovo was built in the 17th Century, with a slanting orientation that imitates Palazzo dei Conservatori, influenced by a pre-existing retaining wall, in the center of which there was a fountain with a statue known as "Marforio", later moved to the courtyard of the Capitoline Museum.

The Palazzo dei Conservatori, seat of elected magistrates that administrated the city, dates back to the middle of the 15th Century. It originally featured a portico on the ground floor and Guelf-cross windows on the first floor, in addition to a row of small windows on the mezzanine floor. Michelangelo redesigned the facade, adding big Corinthian pilaster strips on high pedestals, flanked by pillars in the portico on the ground floor. The building was crowned with a balustrade and statues.

Domus Aurea - Nero's House

Most of the ruins of the Domus Aurea form a nucleus of almost 150 rooms, articulated arounf the octagonal room, the key room of the complex, of almost 400 meters. Mainly constructed in bricks, most of the rooms are covered by vaults from 10 to 11 meters high.

Roman Forum

The Roman Forum is located in a valley that is between the Palatine Hill and the Capitoline Hill. It originally was a marsh, but the Romans drained the area and turned it into a center of political and social activity. The Forum was the marketplace of Rome and also the business district and civic center. It was expanded to include temples, a senate house and law courts.

Vatican Museums

The largest, richest, most compelling and perhaps most exhausting museum complex in the world. Much booty from the city's history has ended up here, from both classical and later times, and many of the Renaissance's finest artists were in the employ of the pope.

Roman Castles

Leaving Rome, drive by the ruins of the Baths of Caracalla and onto the Ancient Appian Way by the Chapel of "Domine Quo Vadis". This tour takes us along the 'Road of the Lakes' through one of the hilly areas of volcanic origin that characterize the outskirts of Rome; the Colli Albani with its many growing villages. Castelgandolfo on the shores of a vulcanic lake, where the Pope has his summer residence, Rocca di Papa and Grottaferrata, known for their culture sights and gastronomic delicacies which include the traditional "porchetta".Towards the northerly part of the Colli Albani, we reach Frascati popular with visitors both for its beauty and considerable wine production. Here we stop for a taste of local wine and to absorb the flavour of village life. Return to the vicnity of your Hotel.

Underground monuments

The Tomb of Cecilia Metella and the catacomb of S. Sebastiano
The tomb of Cecilia Metella owes its fame as the most characteristic and romantic of ancient times to the numerous villas and funeral monuments nearby.
St. Sebastian's Catacombs were the first Christian tombs to be known as Catacombs, named after this valley. The catacombs are three levels deep and there are over 12 km of underground galleries reaching deep down into the earth. There are fascinating early paintings, graffiti, stucco work and fine mosaics. The galleries are lined with hollowed-out niches (loculi), frequently two or three levels high, in which the dead were wrapped in double layers of cloth interspersed with lye to protect the living.
S. Cecilia in Trastevere and the Excubitorium of the 7th cohort of the guards
The underground section of the church of S. Cecilia is quite large and it contains a series of rooms and areas, which belonged to Domus of the later republican period (perfectly visible by a floor in opus signinum) and a very large Roman insula (condominium).
The Excubitorium of the VII cohort of the guards, came to light (in 1865-66) after an ancient wall was found in the garden of a private residence in Piazza Monte di Fiore, opposite Piazza S. Crisogono. The good condition of the monument and the extraordinary documentary value of the graffiti stimulated the interest of researchers.
St. Clemente´s Basilica and Basilica of S.Giovanni in Lateran
The Basilica of San Clemente is located 300 yards from the Coliseum, on the road that gently rises between Colle Oppio (Domus Aurea) and the Celio, leading to St. John in Lateran. It takes its name from Pope San Clemente, third successor of Saint Peter, who died around 100 A.D.
There is a labyrinth of tunnels under the Basilica of St. John in Lateran and it is still possible to admire the ruins of the rich Domus of the Laterani, the ruins of the headquarters of the barracks of the Imperial Guard, the area of the sacrarium, the officers' rooms and the soldiers' dormitories and the remains of a very large Domus of the III century with beautiful frescos and mosaics.
The Catacomb of St. Sebastian, The Catacomb of St. Domitilla, The Catacomb of Priscilla and The Catacomb "Ad Decimum"
The tour we suggest you to take includes a visit to the catacombs of S. Sebastian, from which the word catacombs comes from, and the catacomb of S. Domitilla on the Appian Way and the beautiful Catacomb of S. Priscilla located in Via Salaria. The highlight of the tour is the visit to the Catacomb Ad Decimum in Grottaferrata (15 km south from Rome). The latter tomb is of extreme importance because it is the only one opened to the public practically intact since it was discovered at the beginning of the 20th century. In this catacomb are still buried about 1000 bodies.
