The Problem
According to Safeware Insurance, 591,000 laptops were reported stolen in 2001. This figure is up 53% from last year’s figure of 387,000 laptops. Note that this figure does not account for laptops which were stolen, but not reported.
According to the FBI, 57% of corporate network security breaches had their origins in laptop theft. The sensitive information on the stolen laptops was subsequently used to break into corporate servers. Moreover, according to the OMNI consulting group, nearly 6% of a business's annual gross revenue is at risk due to network security breaches.

This figure accounts for loss of data, productivity, replacement and procurement, among other factors. According to the Computer Security Institute, replacements costs for a stolen laptop is $41,000, which covers the lost data and subsequent damages.
